A Special Forces veteran has set out on one of the most gruelling physical challenges on earth.
Tim Crockett is taking part in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, which will see him row 3,000 miles from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua. The former Royal Marine is one of five solo entrants in the annual race, which also features another 23 teams of up to five rowers.
Inmarsat is supporting Tim by providing satellite communications equipment to help alleviate some of the solitude he will experience. On board his specialised rowing boat, the Kraken, he has a compact Cobham Explorer 510 BGAN terminal and a robust IsatPhone 2 satellite phone, so he can keep in touch with his team and share the experience with supporters – such as this video tour of his home for the next three months.
After serving in the Royal Marines Special Boat Service, Tim became a safety and security consultant for journalists working in hostile locations all over the world. Now based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA he decided to take on the Atlantic challenge to raise awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the prevalence of suicide among veterans and raise money for associated charities on both sides of the Atlantic.
Tim said: “Raising money for these charities is important, as they do so much for so many. But money isn’t all there is – for me, this row is also about awareness: the self-awareness to recognise it’s ok not to be ok and to ask for help if you need it.”
