Satellite connectivity is addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing the planet today.
In this video for Devex, a social enterprise and media platform for the global development community, James Cemmell, Inmarsat Vice President, Government Strategy, explains how satellite can deliver both critical emergency communications when land-based networks are lost – and bridge the digital divide by enabling essential connectivity in communities which still have no internet access, such as fishers at sea. As a result, economically emerging nations are being helped to achieve crucial sustainable development goals (SDGs).
Under the UK Space Agency’s International Partnership Programme (IPP), Inmarsat is leading three projects which are improving people’s lives by helping relief agencies get information in and out of disaster zones; reducing illegal fishing and increasing safety and livelihood security for fishers; and providing better access to healthcare for patients in rural areas.
The IPP is a £152 million initiative funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) to partner the UK’s space expertise with developing countries to deliver sustainable economic or societal benefits.
