Government satcom users look to commercial providers

Government customers are increasingly seeking satellite terminals that can conveniently switch between frequencies and move seamlessly from dedicated military systems to commercial suppliers.

The trend is highlighted in an article for Digital Battlespace, a C4ISR publication, with insights from Inmarsat representatives. They explain how government users are becoming more interested in terminals that are wideband and provide the capability to move between military frequency bands, such as X-band and military Ka-, and also take advantage of the capacity offered by commercial Ka-band. One such solution is COBRA-class terminals that enable automatic switching between Inmarsat Global Xpress and the Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) constellation.

Inmarsat Government’s Chief Technology Officer, Steve Gizinski, discusses how SATCOM on-the-move applications drive the need for smaller terminals, and how Inmarsat is “always working to improve the technology to have antennas that are sufficient, yet very compact, and can support users’ needs”.
