Inmarsat to debut new BGAN high data rate streaming terminal at NAB 2013

Inmarsat (LSE: ISAT.L), the leading provider of global mobile satellite communications services, today announced that it will unveil Cobham SATCOM's EXPLORER 710 on Monday, April 8th at NAB 2013. The Explorer 710 is latest Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) terminal and the first that will be capable of accessing Inmarsat's new high data rate service (HDR), which will offer media organizations and broadcasters significantly increased streaming rates for higher quality video newsgathering.

BGAN HDR is scheduled for commercial launch in Q3 2013. Its full channel option will provide broadcasters with an expected streaming rate of around 650kbps which, when combined with the compact, lightweight and highly portable EXPLORER 710 terminal, will deliver a step-change in video quality.

“Since 2005, the BGAN platform has transformed newsgathering, enabling live broadcasts from the farthest, most inhospitable reaches of the planet”, said Martin Turner, Inmarsat's Media Business Director. “We improved the streaming speeds with BGAN X-Stream in 2009 and now, in 2013, we're introducing the next revolution in satellite newsgathering with BGAN HDR.”

Cobham's small and light EXPLORER 710 is a plug & play device. It features a built-in bonding capability, enabling connection speeds over 1 Mbps, which was previously only possible on a VSAT uplink.

“EXPLORER 710 is the most advanced and smallest class 1 terminal to date and introduces a number of enhancements including bonding and smart phone connectivity. Combined with BGAN HDR, it becomes a compact, reliable and extremely portable solution for the high speed transmission of live video, audio and data from practically anywhere in the world,” said Walther Thygesen, Head of Cobham SATCOM

The EXPLORER 710 will be officially unveiled at an event on Monday, April 8 at 11:30 AM at the Inmarsat NAB booth in the Upper South Hall (#9718) and will be on display throughout the remainder of the event.
