Inmarsat congratulates Guo Chuan on world record voyage

Inmarsat has sent congratulations to Guo Chuan, the 47 year old Chinese sailor, who today arrived safely back in the port city of Qingdao in Eastern China following his record breaking solo, non-stop circumnavigation of the globe.

Inmarsat and China Telecommunications and Information Center (CTTIC) provided Guo with global mobile satellite communication connectivity through its market leading FleetBroadband service (FleetBroadband 250), IsatPhone Pro, FleetPhone Oceana 800, Inmarsat C safety services and airtime.

According to Guo Chuan's support team, the FleetBroadband satcoms system, jointly provided by Inmarsat and CTTIC, proved invaluable. Guo was able to keep in close contact with his onshore support team using FleetBroadband and, on one occasion, was able to change his route to avoid a typhoon. He was also able to call home regularly, speaking to his wife and keeping up to date with news of his baby son.

Andrew Sukawaty, Executive Chairman of Inmarsat plc, said, “This is an amazing achievement by Guo Chuan and we are delighted to have supported him during his record breaking voyage. As leaders in maritime communications, Inmarsat is proud to have been part of his team.”

Guo Chuan set of from Qingdao on 18 November last year in his Akilaria Class 40 boat on an epic journey covering 21,600 nautical miles. This is the smallest vessel ever used for a solo, round-the-world attempt, and Guo had to overcome numerous challenges from storm force winds in the Indian Ocean to tangling with fishing nets in the Java Sea.
