Ultramarathon runners support African wildlife rangers

A team of runners taking part in a desert ultramarathon are relying on Inmarsat BGAN to deliver coverage of the event and help raise awareness of their cause.

For Rangers is a group of individuals who test their endurance in some of the most inhospitable parts of the world to support the rangers who risk their lives to protect Kenya’s wildlife.

The Beyond the Ultimate event is a five-stage, 250km race through one of the world’s most ancient landscapes – the Namib Desert in Namibia. With the support of Inmarsat, distribution partner NSSL and service provider Kinetic6, who have provided a lightweight BGAN terminal and free airtime, the 10-strong For Rangers team is able to upload photos and reports from the vast, empty expanse of sand dunes.

In a tweet midway through the race the team said: “Thank you, on behalf of those running the current Namibia Ultra, for being a great sponsor of For Rangers and everything we do to raise awareness and fundraise for the rangers on the front line of protecting Africa’s wildlife.”

By taking part in some of the most challenging endurance events on the planet, For Rangers aims to draw attention not only to the poaching crisis in Africa but the hardships and dangers rangers are exposed to in trying to protect wildlife. Individuals from Kenya, Tanzania, the UK and New Zealand have so far raised over $200,000 for rangers’ welfare.
