In a contributed article for Via Satellite, Inmarsat Government’s Senior Vice President of Government Strategy and Policy, Rebecca Cowen-Hirsch, highlights the commercial satellite communications (COMSATCOM) advancements made by the industry a decade after the cancellation of the Air Force’s Transformational Satellite Communications System (TSAT).
Cowen-Hirsch discusses TSAT’s goal to provide the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) with military satellite communications (MILSATCOM) to support “net-centric warfare”. She also highlights how the programme’s cancellation, in an effort to reduce defence spending, opened the door for the commercial industry to deliver the mobility, flexibility, resilience and protection required to support DoD missions.
“COMSATCOM became the enabler for national security mission success, as the private industry has been unwavering in its determination to deliver the very best in innovation for servicemen and women who seek ‘anytime, anywhere’ access to voice and high-bandwidth video and data transmissions,” Cowen-Hirsch writes.
