Inmarsat is to be the leading sponsor of the inaugural London International Shipping Week (LISW).
The event, on 9-13 September, will highlight the UK capital's vital role in the positive development of global shipping.
As diamond sponsor, Inmarsat is supporting LISW's aim to focus the maritime industry on London for a week of high-level functions and networking.
As part of the programme, Ship Efficiency: The Event – a conference and exhibition organised by maritime events company Fathom in association with Inmarsat – will look at ways to improve operational and vessel efficiency.
“Inmarsat has a long and proud heritage in the maritime industry,” said Frank Coles, President, Inmarsat Maritime.
“We were founded by the IMO in 1979 to provide safety services to the maritime community. Today, over 30 years later, we remain at the heart of maritime safety across the world and our satellites are the mainstay of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).
“As an industry leader, we are delighted to be the leading commercial supporter of London International Shipping Week.”
London International Shipping Week is organised by Shipping Innovation, in association with Maritime UK partners The Baltic Exchange, Maritime London and the UK Chamber of Shipping, and with TheCityUK, the independent promotional body for UK financial and professional services.
It will offer high level networking opportunities for leaders across all sectors of the international shipping industry – including regulators, charterers, ship owners, ship managers, lawyers, ship brokers, bankers, insurers, ship suppliers, marine surveyors and bunker suppliers, as well as ports and shipping service providers.
Ship Efficiency: The Event will take place on 10-11 September at Church House conference centre in Westminster, central London, with representation from Maersk Maritime Technology, Wärtsilä, the Baltic and International Maritime Council and the American Bureau of Shipping.
Inmarsat will chair a free-to-attend seminar on the second day of the event entitled “Driving profit through integrated operations”.
The seminar will include speakers from Eniram, AWT, UK HO and Pole Sstar and is designed as an open forum to discuss practical solutions and strategies for improving operational and vessel efficiency and, overall, the bottom line profit.
Frank Coles will give keynote addresses at the opening session of Ship Efficiency: The Event and at the LISW gala dinner at Grosvenor House on 12 September.
He commented: “As the global maritime industry continues to operate in an extremely tough environment, ship owners are looking for fresh solutions to optimise the efficiency of their fleet operations.
“Satellite communications are central to addressing these concerns and for opening up new options.
“My message to ship operators is that they can make significant operational efficiencies in areas such as fuel expenditure and emissions reduction if, and only if, they change their mind-set towards satellite communications.”
