Award win for Inmarsat SVP Peter Broadhurst

Inmarsat Maritime Senior Vice President Peter Broadhurst has been recognised for the role he has played in the once-in-a-generation transformation of maritime safety and security.

Leading maritime safety and security activities at Inmarsat, Peter has overseen the initiation, development and delivery of both Fleet Safety and Fleet Secure, whose capabilities address separate but equally critical challenges for ship safety.

Game changer

Fleet Safety is Inmarsat’s new maritime voice and data service which anticipates the modernisation of the IMO’s Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, the public service sustained by Inmarsat since its inception in 1999.

Fleet Secure is a game-changing cyber portfolio protecting ships and shipping against malicious cyber attack, malware, and other vulnerabilities.

Peter was presented with the 2019 SMART4SEA Personality Award in Athens, Greece on 29 January.

As an influential voice on cybersecurity, Peter has repeatedly urged maritime stakeholders to move towards a mature position with or without regulation. He emphasises the critical part awareness plays in cybersecurity from the point of installation onwards, and specifically the role of crew training in raising maritime standards.

Driving Force

In support of this position, Peter has initiated Inmarsat’s own cyber awareness campaign, and is also the driving force in the sharing our experience with the wider industry.

On receiving his award, Peter said: “It is without doubt an honour to receive this award and I would like to thank SMART4SEA for considering me; it is a great privilege to be recognised for my contribution to smart shipping.

“The maritime industry has given me a fantastic career and I have travelled and met so many interesting people. It is an industry that I am proud of and strive to add value to wherever I can. With my role in safety and security and the role of new technology, I am especially focused on the safety of the 1.6 million seafarers that drive this industry forward, now and well in to the future.”
