Stunning global media coverage delivered via FleetBroadband has seen the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 shortlisted for a technology award.
The International Sports Event Management (ISEM) Best Use of Technology prize will be awarded to the organisation “who has best implemented technology that has enhanced the delivery of a sports event”.
Inmarsat was a Race Partner and the Official Satellite Communications Provider for the event, which has also been shortlisted for the “Event Look” and “Environment and Sustainability” awards.
This year's race was a round-the-world IT challenge, from the media crew member programme and the technology behind the online race tracker, to the live broadcasting enabled by Inmarsat, and its partners Thrane & Thrane and Livewire Digital.
The Event Look award will honour the entry that “most effectively presented a major sports event both inside and outside the venue”.
The Volvo Ocean Race highlighted the Abu Dhabi stopover in this category during a highly successful first visit to the Middle East.
For the Environment and Sustainability prize, the race organisers reference the Keep the Oceans Clean campaign, in which the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 partnered the artists' collective Skeleton Sea.
The ISEM will announce the winners on 7 November in London.
