Victory for Team Alvimedica in Leg 9 win

Team Alvimedica saved the best till last, scooping first place in the final stage of the Volvo Ocean Race and securing a first Leg win in the competition!

The Turkish/American boat crossed the Inmarsat Finish Line in Gothenburg to mark the end of the nine month long, 38,739-nautical mile offshore marathon.

Skipper Charlie Enright’s boat led the tightly-packed fleet to the final stopover in Sweden almost from the start in Lorient, France last Tuesday 16 June.

Overall glory

The win brings to a close the incredibly close fought competition, which has seen all one-design Volvo Ocean 65 boats win at least one leg of the race apart from Team Vestas Wind, who missed out on five legs because of a boat rebuild.

However, overall glory goes to Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, who arrived in Gothenburg in fifth position to claim the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 winners title and lift the prized trophy on arrival.

Brunel take second place in the competition with Dongfeng Race Team in third. However the battle for fourth continues between Team Alvimedica and MAPFRE and will now be decided in the Inmarsat In Port race on 27 June.

Throughout the competition all the teams have relied on Inmarsat’s flagship FleetBroadband connectivity for race logistics and weather reports, and Inmarsat C for safety services.

In addition, each of the teams’ Onboard Reporters has been able to bring the excitement of the race to a worldwide audience of fans via daily photos, videos and blogs from the boats.
