TSF deploys to West Indies as Hurricane Irma batters islands

Inmarsat-sponsored aid agency Télécoms Sans Frontières (TSF) is to deploy a team of emergency communications specialists to the West Indies as Category 5 Hurricane Irma makes landfall.

TSF will arrive in the region tomorrow and begin to set up critical communication networks for humanitarian response, including, for the first time, Inmarsat Global Xpress.

Hurricane Irma has sustained wind speeds of up to 287 km/h (180mph), making it the most powerful Atlantic storm in a decade. Thousands of people living on the islands in its path have been evacuated from the most at-risk areas.
