At least 6 million homes and businesses across the region were without power and up to 50 million people were thought to be affected.
At least 15 people were reported dead across the US, five in New York State. About 80 people have died since Sandy struck the Caribbean.
Sandy has now been downgraded to a “super-storm” as it continues north into Canada.
