Dongfeng Race Team wins Inmarsat Communication Award

Content that captured the fun and frustration of competition won Dongfeng Race Team the Inmarsat Communication Award for the second leg of the Volvo Ocean Race.

The 7,000 nautical mile marathon from Lisbon to Cape Town presented plenty of opportunities to keep fans of the race on the edge of their seats. Each of the seven competing Volvo Ocean 65 boats has an Onboard Reporter (OBR) charged with capturing and sending back compelling multimedia content from the world’s oceans – all made possible by Inmarsat.

Dongfeng Race Team posted videos including a lighthearted but informative look at clouds, some good-natured banter between their crew and MAPFRE before a mid-leg interview via FleetBroadband, and the tougher side of ocean racing when things aren’t going your way.

With Vestas 11th Hour Racing and MAPFRE each with a leg win under their belt, the third leg of the 45,000nm round the world race started from Cape Town on 10 December. Ahead of the race teams lies a 6,500 nm battle round the Cape of Good Hope and east across the Southern Ocean to Melbourne.

Reliable connectivity

As official Satellite Communications Partner to the Volvo Ocean Race for a fifth consecutive edition, Inmarsat is providing reliable FleetBroadband connectivity for high-speed voice and data, Inmarsat C safety services and IsatPhone 2 satellite phones for the boats’ liferaft grab packs.

Through our partnership the 2017-18 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race, recognised as the longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world, is also set to be the most connected.
