For off-road fans, it’s the adventure of a lifetime. A chance to get behind the wheel of a Land Rover Discovery and put it through its paces in some of the toughest and most stunning landscapes on Earth. Every two years, Land Rover selects six winners from thousands of applicants to take part in their Experience Tour. In 2019 the destination was Kavango-Zambezi nature reserve, covering parts of Namibia, Botswana, Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe and home to elephants, rhinos, lions, giraffes, zebras and more, as well as the Victoria Falls, one of the natural wonders of the world.

Inmarsat’s global satellite network provided the team with on-demand access to high-speed broadband, voice and M2M communications, keeping them connected anytime and anywhere in the breathtaking wilderness.

Whether it was position-tracking, livestreaming quality video from the vehicle, broadband comms on the move or dependable voice communications, we had the teams covered.

“When traversing some of the world’s most remote environments, the success and safety of our teams hinges on robust connectivity. Inmarsat has provided us with this for many years.”

Dag Rogge, Lead Instructor-Owner and CEO Land Rover Experience Germany

Mounted on the vehicle roof, the Explorer 8100GX can self-deploy and automatically lock onto an Inmarsat Global Xpress satellite, enabling 50 Mbps download speeds. This level of throughput equipped the team with capabilities like real-time data transfer through to video streaming.

Equipped with the Explorer 325 BGAN terminal, the team had easy access to satellite broadband data and voice, even while the Discovery was moving at speed through the rough terrain. IsatPhone 2 provided reliable voice connectivity, with up to eight hours’ talk time (up to 160 hours on standby), while IsatData Pro M2M tracking allowed the organisers to map the progress of the vehicles.
