Superior video quality for breaking news

BGAN HDR (High Data Rate) is Inmarsat’s premium streaming IP service which includes a portfolio of four new streaming rate options for journalists who want the highest quality video for live broadcasting.

Since 2005, the BGAN platform has transformed newsgathering, enabling live broadcasts from the farthest, and most inhospitable reaches of the planet. We improved the streaming speeds with BGAN X-Stream in 2009 and now, in 2013, we’re introducing the next revolution in satellite newsgathering with BGAN HDR.

It delivers the fastest, on-demand streaming data rates in the world of mobile satellite communications and has the ability to transform the audience’s experience of live events.

Live reporting

Capture the scene during live reporting

BGAN enables you to send live broadcasts as soon as you get on the scene, without the need for a local terrestrial broadband connection or costly satellite newsgathering trucks.

BGAN HDR will provide a minimum throughput of 580kbps with its full channel option, but users can expect to see an average speed of 600-700kbps, reaching as high as 800kbps.

It will allow you to move around during broadcasts without affecting video quality and camera operators can pan and zoom to capture the action as it unfolds behind you.

Control direction from the studio

BGAN HDR can be used in parallel with a phone connection so that the gallery can call directions to the camera operator and enable more complex outside broadcasts.

Be on air within minutes

The BGAN service is accessed using a compact and hand-portable satellite terminal, or a vehicular version. Both are quick to set up, with no technical expertise needed. Journalists can establish a connection to the studio in less than five minutes, wherever they’re reporting from.

Report live on-the-move

Sometimes the story demands that you move between locations. With vehicular BGAN you can continue to file your reports while in transit. And with BGAN X-Stream on-the-pause, you can send high-quality, live video from your stationary vehicle.

Enjoy peace of mind

For extra peace of mind, BGAN and IsatPhone Pro, our handheld satellite phone, let you pinpoint your exact location so you can let your colleagues know exactly where you’re reporting from.

Stay in contact

For quick voice calls back to the studio or to stay in touch with family while you’re away, you can use IsatPhone Pro, our handheld satellite phone. The service is accessible worldwide, so you can depend on it for your voice communications, wherever the news takes you.

Deliver best-quality live footage back to the studio with BGAN:

  • BGAN HDR will provide a minimum throughput of 580kbps with its full channel option, but users can expect to see an average speed of 600-700kbps, reaching as high as 800kbps, to ensure consistently high-quality pictures
  • BGAN HDR has been priced to offer greater value for money and for the first time introduces asymmetric services so that you only pay for the data you need. A half-channel HDR option offers current 256kbps users a very cost-effective way to drive up video quality
  • Live video can be broadcast on-demand from the field, with a live feed established in less than five minutes
  • BGAN and IsatPhone Pro are delivered via the Inmarsat-4 satellites which operate at 99.9 per cent availability, so your remote live broadcasting is assured wherever news is breaking
  • BGAN is compatible with leading broadcast video applications and codecs, and other third-party peripherals
  • BGAN terminals are small and lightweight, but rugged enough for use in rough terrain and hostile climates
  • The service is quick and easy to set up and shut down, with no technical expertise or training required
  • IsatPhone Pro is great for calls back to the studio, and global service ensures you can talk wherever the news takes you
