Delivering secure, resilient services to governments worldwide from London and beyond

Government

Inmarsat's Nick Shave highlights how we have been working with governments around the world for 40 years and, as major part of the UK’s space industry, how we continue to lead the world in providing highly secure, global satellite services.

Headquartered on Silicon Roundabout in London, Inmarsat is the world leader in global, mobile satellite communications, providing a wide range of resilient services to more than 80 governments worldwide, including members of the Five Eyes Alliance and NATO via a network of its own satellites and ground stations.

Founded in 1979 Inmarsat was established as a non-profit intergovernmental organisation to deliver maritime safety satellite communications. Today safety services remain an essential part of the company’s work. In addition, Inmarsat is proud to provide governments, commercial enterprises and humanitarian organisations with global, mobile connectivity that turns their biggest challenges into opportunities.

Starting out as satellite pioneers, 40 years on Inmarsat is still a disruptive innovator, with a track record of front-line proven capability. As the leader of the next evolution of global mobile connectivity, Inmarsat will anticipate and meet future customer demand and enable a truly connected world.

Inmarsat is a major part of the UK’s space industry, through procurement in the UK-based sector, building and maintaining national industrial capability, demonstrating commercial deliverability and developing a long term, sustainable industrial-academic-military satellite focus.

Inmarsat ensures the availability of government and military strategic assets through highly secure, global satellite services for always-on, seamless, dynamic coverage for mobile and moving users with the widest global coverage at greater than 99.9% reliability.

Making a difference globally

Security: Inmarsat’s network ecosystem allows for government flexibility and security through

  • Multi-lateral, international incident response is delivered by using ubiquitous technology for all users and through providing capacity that can be used at short notice such as for disaster relief scenarios
  • Coalition operations (including through Five Eyes Alliance and mission support within NATO) through inter-operable platforms and open access agreements
  • The meeting of specific sovereign security requirements through dedicated military satellite payloads for trusted partners strengthened through physical separation from other commercial channels
  • Operational autonomy as required by governments due to Inmarsat owning and operating its own secure satellite networks

Inmarsat delivers a full, end-to-end service using technology that covers full satellite life cycles, from procurement to operations, and that covers networks, ground stations and secure facilities. The company offers a unique mix of commercial and military capabilities based on specific government requirements that increase network and operational resilience.

Inmarsat is agile to customer demand and builds additional, forward planned capacity assuming the risk to do so, which enables governments to use the service on demand in a scalable, agile manner while driving operational redundancy and global portability. Governments benefit from no up-front investment as well as Inmarsat’s unparalleled buying power and technological innovation with its diverse network of satellite manufacturers and launch partners.

Inmarsat is a company of firsts and will deliver the world’s first and only global mobile wideband services to the Arctic region from 2022.

A unique focus on cyber security though

  • Physically separated assets in Five Eyes and NATO countries
  • Technology embedded across Inmarsat networks and products
  • A 24/7 cyber response and security team offering 360-degree situational awareness, based in Inmarsat’s UK-based Cyber Networks Operations Centre
