Fleet Xpress shortlisted for Lloyd's List Awards

Inmarsat is pleased to announce that its new high-speed broadband Fleet Xpress service has been shortlisted for the prestigious Lloyd’s List Global Awards.

The annual awards showcase the best talent and achievements in shipping over the past year and are recognised worldwide as a significant mark of success.

Fleet Xpress has been chosen by a panel of 11 highly regarded maritime industry judges as a finalist in the ‘Maritime Digital Innovation Award’ category.

Innovative technology

This category rewards an innovative project or technology, whether in safety, environment or operational efficiency, which demonstrates the potential to move shipping forward – from new ship designs to applications for business improvement.

The commercial launch of Fleet Xpress in March 2016 represents a once-in-a-generation step change in connectivity between ships and shore.

It delivers a unique, fully integrated dual capability of high speed, high capacity services (Global Xpress) together with high reliability safety-level services (FleetBroadband) in a single commercial package, which is available anywhere in the world.

Connected ship

Fleet Xpress is further enriched by Inmarsat Gateway, a unique service enablement platform designed to provide ship owners, managers and operators with access to a new generation of value-added maritime applications, services and solutions, opening up vessels to the Internet of Things and paving the way for the Connected Ship.

To date, 5,000 vessels have already committed to Fleet Xpress with an additional 2,600 existing Inmarsat XpressLink installations converting to the service over the next three years.

“We are honoured that our new Fleet Xpress service has be shortlisted as a finalist for the Lloyd’s List Maritime Digital Innovation Award,” commented Ronald Spithout, President, Inmarsat Maritime.

Vessel performance

“We invested $1.6 billion and five years of development to bring to market a satellite communications service that will take the maritime industry to the next level of vessel performance, operational efficiency whilst providing rich content for the crew.

“Fleet Xpress is transforming the face of communication at sea, bringing global, reliable, high-speed broadband that will not only dramatically enhance efficiency, but also alter the frontline working experience of an entire industry, meeting the connectivity needs of the modern seafarer.

“But it’s more than just connectivity that makes Fleet Xpress so powerful. The service will enable a revolutionary new application ecosystem by encouraging hardware and software developers to innovate and publish content-rich applications to drive smarter shipping; applications that can perform real-time analysis of data, including engine monitoring, weather information and fuel consumption as well as crew safety and welfare apps.”

New standard

“This is an exciting time for the industry and we are thrilled to be recognised by the esteemed judges in driving technological change and setting a new standard for maritime communications.”

The Lloyd’s List Global Awards ceremony takes place on 29 September 2016 at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London.
