Will Swift 64 or Classic Aero services be phased out over the next few years?

Inmarsat is dedicated to providing Classic Aero services throughout the lifecycle of the I-4 Satellites. Swift 64 services will be provided up until at least 2016.
 
Where is the IMEI number found on the IsatPhone Pro?

If the phone continues to show the GPS fix required icon (which means that a new GPS fix is needed) select Menu > GPS position. The new GPS fix is displayed. When this screen is open, the phone will attempt to refresh the GPS fix every 30 seconds.
 
How does the IsatPhone Pro obtain a GPS fix?
A
Before a call can be made, the phone needs a GPS fix so it can be located by the satellite. This happens automatically, but if a new GPS fix is needed the GPS fix icon will be displayed on the screen. The phone should be kept in the open with a clear view of the sky until the icon on the screen disappears. Once this is done the phone is now ready to register with the network.
 
How does the IsatPhone Pro connect to the Inmarsat network?

Stand outside with a clear view of the sky with the phone antenna pointing upwards. There must be a clear line of sight between the phone's antenna and the satellite. The more sky you can see the stronger the signal should be from the satellite. If open sky makes up about 70% of your view when you look up, then the signal should be strong. 'Searching satellite' will appear on the screen. The top left of the screen will display 'Inmarsat' when your phone is connected to the satellite. The signal bars indicate the signal strength. At least two signal bars are required to make and receive calls.
 
How is the IsatPhone Pro switched on and off?

Hold down the red key, which is found on the top right of the main keypad, until the screen lights up. The first time you use your phone, use the navigation keys to select your language and set the time zone. To switch off, hold down the red key until the screen shuts down.
 
How is the SIM card inserted into the IsatPhone Pro?
A
Remove the battery cover by using a coin to turn the screw slot on the back of the IsatPhone Pro until it is vertical. If the battery is in place, lift it out. Slide the catch down on the SIM holder and flip it outwards. Make sure the angled corner of your SIM card is on your left and slide it into the holder. Flip the holder back into place and slide the catch back up. Insert the battery, replace the cover and turn the screw slot until it is horizontal.
 
What features does the IsatPhone Pro have?

The phone supports global satellite telephony (including Bluetooth for handsfree use), voicemail, SMS text and email messaging, and GPS location data (view position and text)

An end-user customer will need to purchase a FleetBroadband UT that supports Multi-Voice, or upgrade their existing FleetBroadband User Terminal by obtaining the firmware from the specific FleetBroadband manufacturer, or connect an external FleetBroadband Multi-Voice PBX to their FleetBroadband User Terminal.

The Enhanced FleetBroadband Multi-voice option is only available for FleetBroadband users with a FleetBroadband 250 or a FleetBroadband 500 terminal. FleetBroadband150 terminals only support the standard FleetBroadband Multi-voice option.
 
What is enhanced FleetBroadband Multi-voice service?

Enhanced FleetBroadband Multi-voice provides the ability to scale up from the three additional voice lines provided in the Standard option, in increments of one voice line, up to a maximum of five lines, thus allowing a total of up to nine simultaneous voice calls.
 
What is standard FleetBroadband Multi-voice service?

Standard FleetBroadband Multi-voice provides the ability to choose three additional lines for any FleetBroadband terminal, thus allowing a total of four simultaneous voice calls.

Is 505 Emergency Calling via FleetBroadband available while using an ISDN connection?

No. ISDN uses a circuit-switched connection, and since FleetBroadband only allows one circuit-switched connection at a time, the ISDN connection must be ended for a 505 emergency call to be made.
 
Is 505 Emergency Calling via FleetBroadband available while using standard IP connection?

Yes. A 505 call can be made as FleetBroadband supports simultaneous voice and IP connections.
 
Is an IP data connection required for 505 Emergency Calling?
A
No. The FleetBroadband terminal only needs to be switched on and registered for a circuit-switched connection to be able to make a 505 emergency call.
 
Is 505 Emergency Calling GMDSS-compliant?
A
No, 505 Emergency Calling is not compliant with the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). If the vessel is larger than 300GRT, it should be carrying equipment that is compliant with GMDSS. This equipment should be used in the first instance to contact a Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC).
 
Which service is 505 Emergency Calling available on?

505 Emergency Calling is available with FleetBroadband 500, FleetBroadband 250, FleetBroadband150 and FleetPhone.
 
What is the tariff for 505 Emergency Calling?

A wireless connection is not possible with the FleetBroadband 150 terminal. However, FleetBroadband 150 can support RJ45 and RJ11 connections as well as Ethernet.
 
Is TCP Accelerator available for the FleetBroadband 150?

No. It is not available because the TCP Accelerator application is designed for terminals with an average throughput that exceeds 150kbps.
 
What factors should be considered when installing a FleetBroadband 150 antenna?

Set up requires the antenna to be aligned at the highest possible position on the vessel free from obstruction. This will achieve the optimal line of sight and subsequent performance.
 
How easy is it to install FleetBroadband 150?

One person with experience in fitting marine equipment can install a FleetBroadband 150 terminal.
 
Is a Streaming IP connection possible on the FleetBroadband 150?

Is the SwiftBroadband X-Stream service purely asymmetrical/symmetrical or a mixture of both?

As per current Inmarsat services this is a symmetrical service.
 
Do any amendments (i.e. adding SwiftBroadband X-Stream) affect the length of a contract?

As adding SwiftBroadband X-Stream does not constitute a change of package, there should be no change to an existing contract.
 
Will SwiftBroadband X-Stream work with SwiftBroadband discreet SIM cards?
A
Discreet SIM service merely stops the transmission of aircraft position. The information required for the operation of the terminal will be as it currently is, and therefore all services will still operate accordingly.
 
Are two simultaneous SwiftBroadband X-Stream connections (on same aircraft) possible?
A
Each SwiftBroadband channel card is seen by the network as an independent terminal. The number of connections potentially made within a single aircraft is dependent upon the availability of channels within that spot beam.
 
Why are the SwiftBroadband X-Stream rates slower than those for BGAN X-Stream?
A
Different fading characteristics due to the operating environments adversely impact the link budgets and therefore drop the available data rates.
 
How will the SwiftBroadband X-Stream rate affect an exisiting SwiftBroadband application?
A
Applications will need to be able to take advantage of the dynamic bearer: i.e. they will need to be capable of adapting the data throughput depending upon the link that is available for use at the time. This integration needs to be carried out with Inmarsat and/or the manufacturer's engineering teams as a separate project on a case-by-case basis.
 
Is simultaneous use of circuit-switched / ISDN connection and SwiftBroadband X-Stream possible?

The user is not able to access any other packet-switched services from the same terminal while running SwiftBroadband X-Stream. The stated throughput performance figures are based on one channel per aircraft. AMBE+2 circuit-switched voice can be used but may impact X-Stream data rates.
 
Where is SwiftBroadband X-Stream accessible in terms of coverage?

SwiftBroadband 200 is available throughout the I-4 satellite footprint. It utilises a Class 6 (i.e. dual-channel High Gain Antenna) and as such available across the same elevations.
 
Is bonding of multiple SwiftBroadband X-Stream channels possible?

SwiftBroadband X-Stream multi-channel bonding is not a supported function.
 
Does SwiftBroadband X-Stream support spot-beam handovers within each satellite footprint?

SwiftBroadband X-Stream will support spot beam to spot beam handovers on a best effort of service basis. If the destination spot beam does not have capacity then the connection will be shut down.
 
Will SwiftBroadband X-Stream work on an existing SIM card?

Service Providers will be able to provision SwiftBroadband X-Stream on some packages. Please contact your Service Provider as availability may vary.
 
Who is SwiftBroadband X-Stream for?

What is SwiftBroadband X-Stream?
A
SwiftBroadband X-Stream is Inmarsat's premium IP streaming service for aviation. It offers a dedicated 200kHz bearer, on demand, with streaming data in excess of 256kbps.
 
What are the installation options for the SwiftBroadband service?
A
Option 1: Complete a new SwiftBroadband installation on the aircraft. On an aircraft without any Inmarsat equipment installed there is a choice between SwiftBroadband-only avionics and avionics that provide both our Classic Aero services (for safety services) and SwiftBroadband. When selecting an antenna the choice is between a high-gain and low-gain antenna. The type of antenna chosen will determine if it is going to be mounted in the tail or on the fuselage, and the maximum level of data throughput available. Option 2: Upgrade existing "SwiftBroadband-ready avionics". Aircraft with recent Swift 64 installations can be referred to as having "SwiftBroadband-ready avionics". Each avionics manufacturer will have their own timetable for providing the necessary upgrade to operate SwiftBroadband. Depending on the avionics, antenna, and diplexer installed this could include a software upgrade, hardware upgrade or a combination of both. Option 3: Upgrade existing Inmarsat equipment to become SwiftBroadband-capable. In situations where the existing avionics installed are not "SwiftBroadband-ready" an upgrade must be undertaken where the existing avionics are replaced with SwiftBroadband-capable avionics. Depending on whether the requirement is to continue using Classic Aero services (for safety services) together with SwiftBroadband, or standalone SwiftBroadband, the existing avionics can be replaced with a new unit which will be providing SwiftBroadband-only or a combination of Classic Aeronautical services and SwiftBroadband. If the antenna already installed on the aircraft fulfils the technical requirements for SwiftBroadband it can be used for both services. In some instances a change of antenna and diplexer might be required. Option 4: Complement existing Inmarsat installation with SwiftBroadband avionics. On aircraft with an existing installation of Classic Aero services the existing installation can be complemented with the addition of standalone SwiftBroadband avionics. In this instance both systems would be using the same antenna. If the antenna already installed on the aircraft fulfils the technical requirements for SwiftBroadband it can be used for both services. In some instances a change of antenna and diplexer may be required.
 
Can existing antennas and avionics be upgraded for SwiftBroadband?

Swift 64, Aero H, and Aero H+ services with Class 6 High Gain Antennas, and the Aero I service with a Class 7 Intermediate Gain Antenna, can be upgraded for the SwiftBroadband service.
 
Can SwiftBroadband and Classic Aero be used with a common antenna?
A
Yes. SwiftBroadband and Classic Aero terminals can be housed in the same unit, with a single connection to a common antenna. This allows access to SwiftBroadband's increased bandwidth whilst maintaining the safety services available on the Classic Aero terminals.
 
What are the different classes of SwiftBroadband antenna, and the services offered?

Class 7 (single channel) Intermediate Gain Antenna services: Voice 4kbps and SMS; Streaming IP data at 32kbps, 64kbps and 128kbps, with maximum multiple PDP contexts up to 160kbps; Standard IP data with theoretical maximum of 332kbps and a typical range 100-200kbps. Capabilities: one circuit-switched voice call, 11 packet data contexts per channel. Class 6 (dual channel) High Gain Antenna services: Voice 4kbps, ISDN 3.1kHz audio, ISDN RDI, ISDN UDI, SMS, Streaming IP data at 32kbps, 64kbps or 128kbps. Maximum multiple PDP contexts up to 224kbps. Standard IP data with theoretical maximum of 432kbps and typical range of 150-300kbps. Capabilities: one circuit-switched voice call or one ISDN call per channel. 11 Packet Data contexts per channel.
 
How does a customer obtain SwiftBroadband services?
A
The User will need the following equipment: Inmarsat type approved SwiftBroadband terminal. Inmarsat type-approved antenna, DLNA (Diplexer low noise amplifier) and HPA ( High power amplifier). An agreement with a Service Provider (SP) for billing and provisioning is also required.
 
Does the Sun cause any connectivity issues?
A
"Sun outages (interference) caused by the passage of the Sun behind the satellite should not impact I-4 broadband services. The period of interference occurs twice a year and the duration of each event is limited to a few minutes. For the Inmarsat satellite access station (SAS) antennas these Sun outages are known beforehand and handled as part of nominal operations. The beamwidth of the L-band user terminals is such that that they are not impacted by the Sun within the field of view."
 
Are Inmarsat satellites affected by solar magnetic disturbances?
A
Inmarsat monitors the published space weather environment, as provided by NOAA. At geostationary orbits (~36,000km above the Earth) a satellite is normally offered some protection from solar particles by the Earth's magnetic field. But at times of high solar activity (e.g. during flares or coronal mass ejections) the extent of the Earth's magnetic field can be reduced, resulting in the satellites being exposed to higher than normal flux of charged particles. The satellites are designed to handle increases in the charged particle environment, but no amount of shielding can provide total protection, so events do occur. These are sometimes referred to as single event upsets (SEUs). Typically, satellites have redundant on-board systems allowing a back-up to be used whilst an SEU is investigated and the affected equipment returned back to full operations. No interruptions to services are expected.
 
What is the maximum number of bearers in any one I-4 satellite spot beam?
A
For I-4 broadband satelllite services this is dependent on demand. Inmarsat has the flexibility to dynamically assign spectrum and power where it is needed. Capacity can be adjusted and allocated depending upon demonstrated demand for the BGAN family of services.
 
How does Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) work over BGAN, FleetBroadband or SwiftBroadband?

We provide an IP bearer that is transparent to applications, including VoIP. We have tested common VoIP providers such as Skype.
 
Is there global barring available on BGAN?
A
SIM cards can be barred or disconnected for any location by the Distribution Partner (DP).
 
What is the total power output of an I-4 satellite?
A
The total EIRP (Effective Isotropically Radiated Power) that can be allocated to the narrow spot beams is 67 dbW.
 
Can an SMS text be sent to a pager service?
A
Some paging systems have been modified to receive text messages from the local mobile networks. The user will be unable to access the service if they are outside their own country because the numbering scheme (or plan) for pagers is not part of E.164 numbering.
 
When I receive an SMS text, do I pay for this?
A
No, the sender pays for the SMS.
 
What is the process to set up voicemail over BGAN?
A
Dial 57 or +870 772 001 899 from the BGAN network. Then follow the instructions on the recorded voicemail message. The user will be asked to select a PIN number (typically four characters or more) and to state their name. They will then be directed to create a personal greeting for their voicemail. When a new message is received, the network will automatically send a text (SMS) to their terminal. The user can then dial short code 57 to listen to the message.
 
Is ‘BGAN LaunchPad’ able to send an SMS text directly after registration?

Once registered, the BGAN LaunchPad software will be active and able to send and receive SMS.
 
Is there a map which shows the edge of BGAN coverage?
A
Coverage maps are available on the Inmarsat.com website. Satellite coverage maps are not definite because the edge of coverage is not static. Geosynchronous satellites reside within a "box" in space, inside which they drift from one edge to the other (typically 0.5 degree drift). As they drift, so the edge of coverage moves.
 
Is each SMS sent charged separately over BGAN?

Yes. There is a charge for each individual message.
 
What is the short code to collect BGAN voicemail messages?

Dial 57# to collect voicemail.
 
How does satellite network latency impact email performance?
A
Cause and effect latency, or delay experienced over the satellite network impacts the performance of acknowledgements and of packet sizes. The BGAN network typically provides a latency of between 900 - 1100 milliseconds. You can achieve a more cost-effective and efficient email service by ensuring that your email client/server settings have been optimised for satellite networks. For further assistance, please contact your Distribution Partner or Service Provider.

How long are Inmarsat SMS messages kept, if undelivered to mobile phones?
A
SMS messages are sent instantly. If they are not delivered this could be due to an issue with the recipient's network. Customers will need to check the time that mobile phone operators keep SMS messages in their system.
 
How long are SMS messages kept in the system if undelivered to Inmarsat numbers?
A
SMS messages are kept in the system for a maximum of 7 days.
 
How long are messages retained when an email is sent to the SMS service?
A
Inmarsat will keep email messages sent to the SMS service for up to 72 hours.

Can the IsatPhone Pro be used at sea?

IsatPhone Pro is part of Inmarsat's land portfolio and can be successfully used on land. It is designed to be used at sea with a maritime dock and antenna. When maritime environmental conditions are calm, users may have success using it hand-held, but is not designed for such use at sea. To gain the best performance at sea, use IsatPhone Pro in conjunction with a maritime docking station with a maritime antenna. These can be purchased from Beam Communications.
 
What is provisioned for emergency calling outside the USA for the IsatPhone Pro?

Emergency calling is not supported on the IsatPhone Pro outside the USA.
 
What is the format to send an email to the IsatPhone Pro?

How does the IsatPhone Pro indicate a network connection?

In the top left hand corner of the screen "Inmarsat" will be displayed beneath "IsatPhone", and four beeps will be heard when the phone is connected to the network.
 
Is there a Chinese keypad version of the IsatPhone Pro?

PINYIN input of simplified Chinese is available. This is achieved by phonetically entering the 'sound' of characters and requires the user to select from a list of relevant characters. The phonetic entry is achieved through Latin character input.
 
Why is the IsatPhone Pro battery not charging?

When a battery is dead the display will show a black screen. It can take 5-7 minutes to appear to start charging. This is because it needs some charge to light the back screen and show the battery icon charging
 
How can contacts be synchronised using the IsatPhone Pro?

The USwiftBroadband drivers must be installed before the synchronisation tool is run
 
Does the IsatPhone Pro support Fixed Number Dialling?

The Isat Phone Pro supports Fixed Number Dialling. This allows the administrator of the phone to lock outgoing calls to specific numbers or prefixes. The Fixed Number Dialling feature is switched on and off from the Security menu and requires the PIN2 code (9999 by default). The user then goes to "Contacts", where the "FND" section allows numbers to be typed in or copied from the phonebook. With Fixed Number Dialling switched on, these are the only numbers that can be dialled. The other phone numbers stored on the phone remain available for browsing but not calling. IsatPhone Pro battery life is 8 hours talktime and up to 100 hours standby time. If a user experiences a reduced battery life then the firmware version should be checked to ensure that the latest version is installed.
 
How is the keypad locked on the IsatPhone Pro?

You can lock the keypad by pressing the mains key in the centre of the phone followed by the * key. Only the green and red buttons will be active now.
 
How is the IsatPhone Pro’s battery charged?

Plug the charger into the power source. Then connect the mini USB connector from the plug into the base of the phone. Leave to charge until battery is full (it's important to fully charge when first purchased).
 
How is the voicemail feature accessed on the IsatPhone Pro?

To retrieve and listen to voicemails, press and hold down the 1 key, or dial 57. This will then automatically dial your voicemail inbox. Alternatively you can dial the voicemail box directly on +870 772 001 899 and press the green key to dial.

When there is a incoming call and the phone is ringing you can press the red button to decline it. The details of the calling party will now be stored in the call register, under missed calls.

If you press the green button you can see a list of the previous numbers which you have dialled. Cycle through the numbers with the cursor keys, and l press the green button again when you reach the one you want to call.

To make a call enter the full international number by dialling +, then the country code, area code (without the leading 0), telephone number and then press the green key, eg. +44 1621 123 456.
