Network at the ready for Hurricane Sandy response

Inmarsat is actively monitoring and managing satellite traffic over the US east coast in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

All non-essential maintenance on the network has been suspended to ensure maximum network stability for first responders and others who are using Inmarsat mobile satcoms.

All of Inmarsat's services, including maritime safety capabilities, are fully functional and we are continually optimising satellite resources in the region to support rescue and recovery efforts.

Critical time

The team at the Inmarsat Network Operations Centre in London has introduced enhanced procedures to ensure that the best possible service is provided at such a critical time.

Users of the IsatPhone Pro global handheld are being reminded to use the free test service to check they have a network connection (see below).

Hurricane Sandy has been declared a “major disaster” as a record 4-metre (13-foot) tidal surge has sent seawater flooding into large parts of New York's subway system.

Without power

At least 6 million homes and businesses across the region were without power and up to 50 million people were thought to be affected.

At least 15 people were reported dead across the US, five in New York State. About 80 people have died since Sandy struck the Caribbean.

Sandy has now been downgraded to a “super-storm” as it continues north into Canada.
