International Seafarers’ Welfare Awards recognise excellence

Seafarers will get the opportunity to thank the individuals, companies and organisations that do the most to support them at the Inmarsat-sponsored 2016 International Seafarers’ Welfare Awards today (24 June).

The International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) awards, taking place in Manila during Seafarers’ Awareness Week, for which Inmarsat is a gold sponsor, recognise the highest standards in welfare services and facilities. All the award candidates are nominated by crew members.

Gerbrand Schalkwijk, Chief Sales Officer, Inmarsat Maritime will be speaking at the awards and highlighting our commitment to crew welfare through our innovative and new-generation services, Fleet Media and Fleet Xpress.

The award categories include Seafarers’ Centre of the Year and organisation and individual accolades for Welfare Personality of the Year. As well as a celebration of best practice, the event also serves to raise the profile of seafarers’ welfare.

Roger Harris, ISWAN Executive Director, said: “We are delighted to be able to hold the 2016 awards ceremony in the Philippines, where a large number of the world’s seafarers are from.”

The awards, which will be presented by International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary General Kitack Lim, come on the eve of the IMO’s Day of the Seafarer, which this year highlights how merchant fleets’ crews are responsible for keeping the wheels of the world in motion.
