Industry accolade for top communicator

Congratulations to Chris McLaughlin, Inmarsat Senior Vice President, External Affairs & Marketing, who is again named in the prestigious PR Week Global Power Book.

PR Week is the leading title for the UK’s public relations industry and its annual Power Book provides a definitive guide to the country’s most influential comms professionals.

Chris, an entrant since the Power Book’s inception in 2009, has been named for his work at Inmarsat, building on a career that spans over 30 years in the field of communications and external affairs.

Technology firsts

From a chance encounter with a customer at a ski shop post-university, who owned the creative powerhouse Grayling PR, to being instrumental in the launch of multiple technology firsts – including the Sony Walkman, the mobile phone and the first Japanese home computer – Chris went on to spearhead communications for terrestrial, satellite and cable telecoms companies before joining Inmarsat in 2004.

Today he is responsible for the global marketing communications, global agency and reputation management of the company.

His advice be for those starting out on the first rung of the corporate communications ladder?

Enquiring mind

“Have a resilient and enquiring mind across lots of areas. Think about the company in its entirety, how it works, what it does and remember you are the face of the company.”

And where does he see the evolving role of communications in the future?

“The business role of corporate communications will become ever more fast-moving and critical as the world continues to be more connected. FTSE companies are required to pay great attention to their reputation.”
