Web feeds

What are they?

A web feed informs you when changes or updates have been made to a website and are delivered to your desktop in headline format using RSS. You can then browse and choose which items you want to read in more detail.

You have the chance to subscribe to all news about Inmarsat, or to select your particular area of interest, such as maritime. A specific press release feed is also available.

How do I set up RSS?

You need a piece of software, called a newsreader. It automatically checks the web feeds you've subscribed to and notifies you when updates or changes have been made.

There are several different types of newsreader, including:

  • Browser-based - e.g. Microsoft's Internet Explorer
  • Web-based - e.g. as provided by the Hotmail service
  • Stand-alone program - accessed using a separate, downloadable program.

Stand-alone programs have the advantage of enabling you to keep news feeds on your computer, in the same way that you download email using Microsoft Outlook.

How do I get a newsreader?

There are various newsreaders designed to work on different operating systems, so you will need to choose one that works with your smartphone, tablet or computer.
