Primary role purpose

To work as part of the IT Operations team to maintain IT services to the Inmarsat Corporate and non-Corporate community. IT Operations supports infrastructure which in turn supports a wide cross section of services/functions across a global server and storage estate.

This role of Systems support Analysts has 2 main functions:

Foundation Support – This function is defined as generic, maintenance, Server and O/S level support along with administrative duties common to across all SSA in the group. Such as:

  • Response to Alerts, Callouts and Tickets
  • BAU Maintenance – Backup, Updates, Security, Preventative Maintenance
  • Routine o/s /Domain level administrative tasks.

Key Responsibility Support – This function is defined as covering those areas of specific responsibility for the long term health, efficiency and availability of services and the operation which support them. The duties are specific to SSA2:

  • Providing a regular Key contact within the group to specific groups/stakeholders
  • Providing feedback from specific groups/stakeholders to IT Operations regarding future plans and evolution of services which will affect operations and infrastructure
  • Providing feedback to specific groups/stakeholders regarding planned events which may have impact on their systems and services
  • Identify issues which have future impact and address these
  • Providing briefing, training and instruction to IT operations as specific systems/services evolve. In order to maintain good service
  • Be the technical/business expert within the team for unix and linux based systems as both a next line support and provider of impact analysis.

The scope of the role of SSA1 is –

Foundation support -

The operation and maintenance of Infrastructure Supporting Corporate, Business and Network services. Which includes:

  • All systems supported by the Business systems Infrastructure (Oracle Solaris based zones and Clusters supporting key business systems)
  • All other Business systems based on VMware, Windows, Linux, Unix and storage infrastructure. (Eg. Financial systems, Provisioning, Conference Booking…)
  • All Corporate systems based on VMWare, BSI, Linux, Unix and storage infrastructure, (Eg. Inmarsat AD domain, Exchange and Email, Shared drives, Intranet…)
  • Agreed ground network and service network supporting systems (OAMS, DCN server, SAS backup, Support Terminal Servers…).

Key responsibilities

Unix (Solaris) system administration

  • Access administration
  • Upgrades and patching
  • Unix system maintenance and security
  • Solaris Clusters – Business Systems Infrastructure
  • Solaris Zones.

Linux system administration

  • Access administration
  • Upgrades and patching
  • Unix system maintenance and security.

Supervision of Interns.

  • Ensure that first-line checks and routine tasks are carried out
  • Ensure the availability and proper time management of Interns as a shared resource for the team (Other duties of Interns include base system builds, backup and systems checks, registering h/w support calls with 3rd parties, inventory and general admin tasks)

The post holder will carry out his/her duties Monday to Friday that covers the hours of 9am until 5pm and provide extended support Monday to Friday and on-call cover on weekends and bank holidays in line with requirements, as per the extended support and on-call policy. This post requires initiative but the post holder must also be comfortable working in a team environment. They must also exercise discretion in providing information to sources outside of the company and must act within the Inmarsat policy guidelines.

Essential knowledge and skills

  • At least 5 year’s proven work experience in support of IT Infrastructure in a mixed Server, Storage and IT service environment
  • Proven troubleshooting skills under time constraints
  • Good communications skills and an ability to provide excellent customer service over the phone, via email and face to face
  • Solid understanding of Information Technology and IT infrastructure.

Primary skills and experience:

    • Unix system build, support an administration (Oracle Solaris)
    • Linux build, support and administration. (RHEL)
    • Administration of DNS/DHCP (BIND).

Secondary experience

    • Microsoft Windows build, support and administration in Active directory environment. (W2008+)
    • Administration of Exchange and SMTP
    • Administration of SAN/NAS storage.
  • Support of IT Infrastructure for critical business function (ERP and service network management).
  • Familiar with supporting users operating in a corporate network infrastructure including knowledge of TCP/IP.

Desirable knowledge and skills

  • Network concepts and components (Cisco).
