Inmarsat is set to meet the expected surge in demand for in-flight passenger WiFi connectivity with the deployment a unique Europe-wide aviation network.
This unique 4G communications network will be delivered via Europasat, a new multi-band satellite, over 30MHz of the S-band.
It will also be fully integrated with Inmarsat’s revolutionary Global Xpress (GX) aviation services, permitting GX customers to roam on to the network when in Europe and extending coverage for European passengers seamlessly across the rest of the world via GX.
Inmarsat has appointed Thales Alenia Space to manufacture Europasat, which will be integrated with purpose-built ground-to-air network stretching across Europe. The satellite is expected to be delivered towards the end of 2016.
The Europasat initiative was made possible by the European Commission’s S-band Application Programme, which enables Inmarsat to acquire operational licences in each of the 28 member-states of the European Union (EU) and to roll out the network across the continent.
As well as delivering value-added in-flight connectivity services to EU businesses and consumers, the network is expected to foster high-value R&D, encourage product and service innovation, and bring new jobs and economic growth.
