Why use Inmarsat safety services?

Inmarsat safety services are used by ships throughout the world. Thousands of lives have been saved over the years and countless seafarers set sail every day secure in the knowledge that help is at hand at the touch of a button.

Reliability

With best network availability in the satcom industry, ships sending distress alerts via Inmarsat know they can trust a system that exceeds the availability requirements of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

A clear channel

Unlike terrestrial communications systems, Inmarsat provides clear-channel communications at all times, because Inmarsat's satellite links are largely unaffected by the weather and other interference.

Direct contact

Inmarsat provides an automatic and direct connection from ship to onshore rescue services, instead of the two-stage process that is necessary with most terrestrial communications.

Flexibility

Stay in touch and enjoy the security of having Inmarsat on your vessel. Standard voice and data communications services are provided by the same satellites, the same network, and often the same terminals as those used to provide safety services.

Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)

Inmarsat is the satellite cornerstone of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, and has been since its inception in 1992. The GMDSS emphasises the ability to alert shore-based search and rescue authorities, as well as shipping in the immediate vicinity, in order to achieve co-ordinated assistance and rescue operations.

Vessels that have to comply with the GMDSS - cargo ships over 300grt and all passenger ships on international voyages - are able to meet all their satellite communications requirements by using Inmarsat.
