New York Mets star climbs Kilimanjaro for trafficking victims

04-01-2012 - A star player with the New York Mets is swapping the baseball diamond for the slopes of Kilimanjaro to raise money for a charity supporting the victims of sex trafficking in India.

Starting pitcher R.A. Dickey will take a Thrane & Thrane Explorer 500 BGAN terminal donated by Inmarsat when he climbs the summit 19,341 ft (5,895m) mountain.

This will allow him to file a daily blog for the New York Times and keep followers on Twitter right up to date - helping to bring in more donations and to raise awareness of the work of Bombay Teen Challenge.

Health clinic
The charity was set up in Mumbai, India, in 1990 to rescue and care for impoverished women, children and men caught up in prostitution.

Dickey will be helping to raise US$100,000 for a new health clinic in the centre of the city's red light district.

Climbing Kilimanjaro has been a lifelong ambition for Dickey, who has persuaded two fellow players - teammate Dave Racaniello and Colorado Rockies pitcher Kevin Slowey - to join him.

Thanks to Inmarsat BGAN, he will also be able to keep in touch with family and friends back home in Nashville, Tennessee, during the 12-day trip this month.
