Cameroon fans followed World Cup via BGAN X-Stream

16-07-2010 - Football fans in Cameroon were kept up to date with the latest World Cup news of their national team thanks to BGAN X-Stream.

Broadcaster Equinoxe Télévision successfully deployed Inmarsat's premium IP streaming service from distribution partner Stratos to broadcast news and match results for the Cameroon side from the tournament in South Africa.

Equinoxe, one of only two private TV stations in the west African nation, used a prepaid BGAN X-Stream solution from Stratos' partner E-Sat for live broadcast and store-and-forward video clips to provide World Cup coverage to its home audience.

Exceeded expectations
Equinoxe aired 30-minute broadcasts every two days, while the national team was in contention. Cameroon - which has qualified for more World Cup tournaments than any other African side - played against Japan, Denmark and The Netherlands, but was knocked out.

Using the online Stratos Dashboard, Equinoxe easily monitored the satellite airtime used from the field and effectively managed their prepaid airtime commitment.

"Our deployment of BGAN X-Stream for World Cup coverage exceeded our expectations," said Théophile Biamou, chief operating officer of Equinoxe Télévision.

Easy and affordable
"The Stratos prepaid BGAN solution does not require monthly fees, which makes it very affordable to deploy. We effectively used a free Mac-based encoding application.

"Our engineers found BGAN very easy to use."

Biamou added: "Before deciding to deploy BGAN X-Stream, we checked with our associates at Al Jazeera English and they highly recommended it. The system will help us achieve independence from other news networks."
