Tour Tracker relays progress of Tour de France
06-07-2010 - Fans of the Tour de France can follow the progress of this year's marathon cycle race - on their iPhone and on the web.
The official Tour de France iPhone application and Versus Tour Tracker website was developed by Participant Sports, which has teamed up with EMS Global Tracking - part of EMS Technologies - to deliver near real-time tracking.
Position reports are taken along the route using EMS Global Tracking's SAT-202 terminals fitted to the official race cars, and then relayed via the Inmarsat IsatM2M global two-way messaging service.
Constant updates
The 97th Tour de France started on 3 July in Rotterdam, The Netherlands,
and finishes 3,600 kms (2,250 miles) later in Paris on 25 July.
Live tracking is showing fans exactly where the race has reached and tracking any breakaways on 18 of the 20 stages (time trials not included).
John McQueen, senior director of global sales at EMS Global Tracking, said: "Cycling fans around the world will be able to enjoy continuous updates on the race using our tracking technology.
Breakaway groups
"We will be charting the peloton - the main group of cyclists in the race
- and the progress of any other breakaway groups over each stage."
IsatM2M is a two-way burst messaging service that enables a wide range of machine-to-machine applications for tracking and monitoring remote fixed or mobile assets on a global basis - whether on land, at sea or in the air.
