SkyWave report highlights surge in remote monitoring
19-02-2010 - Remote management of assets is set to surge over the next 12 months using a range of technologies - including those supported by Inmarsat's network, according to a report by SkyWave Mobile Communications.
Research carried out by technology research organisation the Aberdeen Group, indicates that monitoring of serviceable assets is poised to grow from 27.9 per cent in 2009 to 40.6 per cent over the next 12 months.
SkyWave's white paper - Why Remote Monitoring? - also highlights why both IsatM2M and BGAN, two services offered via the Inmarsat network, are attractive solutions for organisations looking to serve customers better, generate new revenue streams and save operational costs.
Safety and savings
"Satellite typically offers a ubiquitous and often global service," said SkyWave product
marketing manager Anu Sood.
"IsatM2M is ideal for sending and receiving small amounts of data - 10.5 to 25.5 bytes - at minimal cost, while BGAN enables a laptop computer to be connected and for large files to be sent."
SkyWave's white paper aims to educate organisations on why they should track and monitor remote assets and outlines a number of benefits including:
- Reduced paperwork and site visits
- Improved driver and equipment safety, and
- Lower equipment downtime.
"Remote management can also yield increased sales and make operations more scaleable. By providing field information and implementing more efficient processes, companies are able to provide better customer service," said Anu.
"Improved customer service ultimately leads to higher customer satisfaction and increased sales. Moreover, increased efficiency means that companies are able to handle higher order quantities with existing resources and personnel."
Additional revenue
The report says information gathering can become a revenue stream in itself. Companies
that lease or sell equipment can offer equipment usage information to their customers
on a subscription or pay-per-use basis.
According to the Aberdeen Group, 30 per cent of 'leading firms' say the provision of asset usage and performance reports to their customers. The white paper briefly outlines recent examples from both land mobile and maritime sectors where remote monitoring has yielded these benefits.
The Aberdeen Group research also indicated that 60.4 per cent of serviceable assets would benefit from remote service capabilities.
