Inmarsat completes satellite phone service portfolio with maritime phone
09-11-2007 - Inmarsat plc (LSE: ISAT) the leading provider of global mobile satellite communications services announces the availability of FleetPhone, the maritime version of its IsatPhone and LandPhone satellite phone service.
Inmarsat's FleetPhone is an affordable, fixed phone service ideal for use on smaller maritime vessels and boats. Easy to install and use, it is especially cost-effective in multi-user environments for ship-to-shore crew calling.
The compact terminal with integrated handset is purpose-built for below deck operation. A lightweight omni-directional antenna is mounted above deck and all components are designed for marine conditions and to meet maritime industry standards.
The availability of this marine phone completes Inmarsat's handheld satellite phone service portfolio first introduced on 16 July, 2007. With IsatPhone, LandPhone and now FleetPhone, the full complement now establishes Inmarsat as the world's only one-stop provider of mobile voice and broadband satellite communications.
FleetPhone terminals are expected to retail at about US$1,500, with voice call charges expected to cost less than US$1 per minute. The service is available across the South China Sea and India Ocean region.
Michael Butler, Inmarsat's president and chief operating officer, commented: "In FleetPhone we have an affordable yet rugged maritime phone suitable for a range of uses spanning small vessels, leisure craft, workboats and regional merchant fleets. As with all devices in our satellite phone service portfolio, FleetPhone represents a compelling proposition for those who want a low-cost, low maintenance phone service backed by Inmarsat's proven network."
The satellite phone service portfolio is available from eight Inmarsat distribution partners - ACeS, Chinasat, Evosat, Fono, MCN, MVS, Satcom Global and Stratos.
FleetBroadband - the first fully IP based maritime service - will be launched later
this month.
