5,000 terminals link national elections in Philippines

19-11-2009 - Complex country-wide elections in the Philippines will rely on high-speed mobile communications powered by 5,000 BGAN terminals.

The Philippines' Commission on Elections signed a major deal with Smartmatic for the terminals to help co-ordinate the presidential, legislative and local elections in May 2010.

Smartmatic, a supplier of electoral solutions and services, is buying 5,000 Wideye Sabre1 BGAN terminals from Addvalue Communications, a subsidiary of Inmarsat partner Addvalue Technologies.

Voting machines
The terminals will support Smartmatic's 82,200 automated voting machines being deployed across the 7,107 islands that make up the Philippines archipelago.

The BGAN terminals services will help transmit election results to more than 1,700 canvassing and consolidation centres.

Smartmatic chief executive Antonio Mugica said: "Due to the specific conditions of the Philippines, both in terms of geography and the expectations of the Filipino people of having a modern electoral system, the 2010 automated elections will prove a landmark project - one we are taking on with all our resources and commitment.

Landmark project
"The result will be a seamless and reliable election that will become a world reference for others to follow."

Chairman and chief executive of Addvalue Dr Colin Chan said: "The partnership with Smartmatic in this milestone election project is clearly a mark of confidence and endorsement by Smartmatic on the quality, reliability and performance of Addvalue's Wideye Sabre Terminals."
